The Magic Of Steam Locomotives

The magic of steam locomotives is kept alive in many places, and none are more accessible than the Nevada Northern Railway in Ely, Nevada. Your ticket to the museum includes the grounds and the shops, where you’re (mostly) free to roam, and imagine, as I did in September.

Your work is to keep cranking the flywheel that turns the gears that spin the belt in the engine of belief that keeps you and your desk in midair. —Annie Dillard

Summer sunshine spread across a sidewalk
Cool country on the radio, down low
Breezes slipping through a screen door
Rustling curtains with their laughter
While hamburgers sizzle on a grill
Cooked just right, with onions and fries
And a cold drink over crushed ice

Wind rows of ripening grass
Wheat fields waiting their turn
Strawberries gone, raspberries next
Sunflowers if we’re lucky
Dragonflies glinting at the water’s edge
Hummingbirds at the honeysuckle
And a piece of old, greasy machinery
