The paved portion of White Mountain Road ends at the Schulman Grove, named in honor of Dr. Edmund Schulman, where the temporary visitor center is located. Park here to walk either of two short trails, the one-mile Discovery Trail and the four-mile Methuselah Trail.
This grove of bristlecones includes Methuselah, at 4841 years the oldest known tree in the world. Somewhere between interpretive markers 15 and 16 on this walk you’ll pass it, but you won’t know which tree it is—it’s unmarked to protect it from vandalism. After forty-eight centuries people are the greatest threat to its existence.
