In The Lower Pasture

In The Lower Pasture

Our neighbor was tenacious about keeping her acreage and outbuildings clean and functioning—in nearly twenty years I don’t recall anything on her property that fell into disregard or repair. But she’s been gone a while, and the folks renting the place now don’t have the time or inclination (or that South Dakota-bred tenacity) to put it back into prime shape. And that’s the only reason I was able to include a section of failing wooden fencing in this photo.

In The Lower Pasture

I was shooting along the roadside with the 400mm (on a tripod), where a number of American goldfinch were feeding among the thistles—much too quick for me this day, but then a swallowtail butterfly came by, equally intent on its browse, to provide another, slower hint of yellow.
