On The Edge

When I was in Yellowstone in late September I stopped at the West Thumb Geyser Basin one morning on my way to Old Faithful. I hadn’t visited West Thumb’s thermal features in many years: that portion of the national park, which includes Yellowstone Lake, isn’t (for me) as interesting as other areas.

On that day smoke from a large wildfire blanketed the lake, and combined with steam from the basin created a mysterious landscape where depth and distance became suspect. Fishing Cone hovered at the lake’s edge, while gazing across the appropriately-named Abyss Pool would give brief hope to those few who don’t believe our planet is round.
