Artist In Residence

My wife’s flower garden is a small space, barely twenty by twelve feet. It’s evolved these past few years, with new plants added and a discreet stone path underfoot, and it’s become a favored destination for rufous hummingbirds, house wrens, bumblebees, and swallowtail butterflies. As I look at the garden arrangements it occurs to me that the gardener is the real artist here: all the decisions made to put things just so, with dirt for an easel, creating something from nothing. And something quite beautiful.
